Swansea is a vibrant and lively city by the Sea. It is a lovely environment  with lots of indoor and outdoor activities. It offers sporting activities like biking, walking, skating,  playing or watching rugby, fishing and swimming. It also has lots of museums, galleries and centres. Things to do in Swansea


Swansea has lots of activities to suit many different interests.

Music - The people of Wales are famous for their love of music and, in particular choral singing; there are many choirs in Wales and their rehearsals are often open to visitors.
One of the newest choirs is the Morriston Phoenix Male Choir. They welcome visitors, so go along, listen and enjoy. Have a look on the website www.morristonphoenix.com  View map also www.dunvant.org
the choir has regular  concerts & rehearsals  They rehearse most Monday and Thursday evenings at Olchfa School (SA2 7AB) from 7 to 9 pm. Visitors and particularly potential choristers are given a warm welcome.

Samba Tawe is a percussion and dance group, based in Swansea, South Wales.  They were established in 1994 and have evolved from that time into a 60+ performance outfit comprising drummers, percussionists and a dance group.  To find out more information: (i.e. joining them or going to see them perform). Walking - There are lots of good walks in and around Swansea. For example: there is a nice walk around the bay, starting at the Marina View mapand following the curve of the bay as far as the lighthouse at Mumbles, or just a bit further, around the corner to Bracelet Bay. View map
This walk will introduce you to many of the attractions.  The BBC site has information about the walk from Blackpill onwards. 
As well as seaside you can reach beautiful waterfall country about an hour from the city in the Neath area.  Instructions for the walk can be found here : http://www.walkscene.co.uk/Wales/Brecons/Waterfall1.htm and there are 3 waterfalls: Sgwd Clun-gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clwn-gwyn and Sgwd yr Eira.

 

 

Skating - There are miles of lovely flat surface to roller blade along the sea front. If you want to perform tricks on your skates, there's a free skate ramp between Blackpill & Mumbles. View map

 

Crazy Golf at the boating lakeGolf - there's a municipal golf course (Pitch & Putt) at the bottom of Sketty Lane. Anyone can play for a fee of about £4.00. For that you get putters & a couple of balls. View map

Childrens Parks & play areas:

Singleton Boating Park - a boating lake with Swans & Dragon boats, crazy golf, an enclosed play area for smaller children and noisy geese and ducks to feed.View map

Blackpill Lido - a shallow paddling pool for children, a wonderful set of climbing frames & toys, plenty of benches for mums & dads, grass to stretch out on in the summer and a handy cafe for a cup of tea.View map

Rugby - Rugby is one of the most popular sports in Wales, for more information on Rugby in Swansea, have a look at Swansea RFC Official Website. The rugby ground is located just off Mumbles Road. Fishing - Sea Fishing in Swansea is a fun activity and it is free. If you want to fish in rivers or lakes you need to buy a licence, but to fish in the sea all you need is a fishing rod and some bait to attract the fish. For bait you can use worms, small pieces of fish or maggots. At high tide in Swansea bay you will see lots of people fishing near Knab Rock, just past Verdi’s café. View mapYou can also fish from Mumbles Pier, but you have to pay a small charge to go on the pier. If you want to learn about fishing have a look here, or better still, go and talk to a fisherman, they mostly enjoy sharing their knowledge.

Dylan ThomasThe  Dylan Thomas Centre: If you walk from the Sail Bridge that joins the New SA1 development with its new offices & appartments, you will arrive at the Dylan Thomas Centre. The  Dylan Thomas Centre is a free museum that tells the story of Dylan Thomas, Swansea’s most famous poet. From the the Dylan Thomas Centre, facing the river turn right & walk through the marina. You will walk past a statue of Dylan Thomas the poet, where visitors like to have their photos taken. View map

Waterfront MuseumThe Waterfront Museum: Continuing on from the Dylan Thomas centre, you will also pass the Tramshed with memorabilia from the famous Mumbles railway. Next you will see the Waterfront Museum, Swansea’s newest museum that tells the maritime  history of Swansea and its close  relationship to the sea. Swansea MuseumThe Swansea Museum: Nearby to the Waterfront Museum,  you will find the Swansea Museum which  is the oldest museum in Wales (created in 1861). The collections contain all kinds of objects from the past of Swansea, Wales and the rest of the world. They have everything from an Egyptian mummy to a Welsh Kitchen, displayed in six galleries. There are also many changing temporary exhibitions each year. It is a fascinating treasure house of Swansea's past history. View map

Things for the family


The City and County of Swansea offers a Passport to Leisure for residents who are on a low income. This gives them a discount on a wide range of sports and leisure venues throughout the Authority, along with various discounts in eleven private companies.

For kids there is also Swansea Charity Circus Eruption which is an integrated youth circus group which offers free skills sessions for young people aged 11 - 19. It is located at Circus Eruption, 47 Mansel Street, Swansea, SA1 5SW. Tel: 01792 474004 View map 

There is always something to do, there are festivals and events throughout the year.

Summer Holidays - if you are looking for somewhere to go on a warm day, make a picnic and take the half hour bus trip to Caswell Beach. From the Quadrant the number 1 bus goes every half hour to the beach. An all day ticket will get you there and back. the Bus  goes every half hour, 10.45, 11.15, 11.45 etc and returning at 25 minutes past the hour eg 5.25, 5.55. There's a cafe, shop & public toilets near the beach. Young children love playing in small pools & of water, and making sand castles with a bucket and spade. Don't forget to take sunscreen with you and a shade if its sunny.
