Notes and Coins:

The pound Sterling (often called a quid) is divided into 100 pence and is the official currency of the United Kingdom. In England and Wales, the banknotes issued by the Bank of England are legal tender, however, in Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man other sterling banknotes are often used. Be aware, sometimes these other notes manage to find their way to Swansea and can often be rejected by shopkeepers. The following coins and notes are those that are most frequently used in Wales:

How to open a bank Account

  • To open a bank account in the UK, you must provide the bank with the following information:
  •  Proof of identity (passport, national identity card or national driving licence)
  •  Proof of UK address (tenancy agreement or letter of confirmation from your employer)
  •  Proof of employment is also sometimes required.
It is important to open a bank account since most employers will pay your wages directly into your bank account.

Foreign Exchange

You can exchange money in one currency for another at several locations around Swansea, the post office usually offers standard rates of exchange. in Swansea you can exchange any money in Marks & Spencer, Oxford Street, third floor. There will be no charge for the transaction.
