What to do in an Emergency...

1. Call 999

2. Ask for the Police, Ambulance or Fire Service

3. Give your telephone number

4. Say where you are

5. Say what is happening

  • When you have an emergency problem you have to call 999.
  • You will be asked if you want the Police, the Ambulance or the Fire Service. You will have to tell the operator which emergency service you need.
  • You will then be put through to the service you have asked for. If possible you must give your name and address – and the reason you are calling for.

The emergency telephone operator will ask:

  1. which emergency service you need - police, ambulance or fire
  2. your name and location
  3. the telephone number you are calling from
  4. the location of the emergency
  5. details of what is happening.
Key words would be 'Police needed, we have an emergency' or 'Ambulance needed – we have an emergency' etc

Dial 999 (the UK emergency number)  when:

  • there is a fire
  • someone is drowning or they are in difficulty on the water
  • lives are at risk or there is serious injury
  • there is violence
  • a crime is taking place
  • you think a criminal is at the scene or nearby.

If calling from a mobile phone the 999 call may not go to an operator in Swansea, so if you can, you should include Swansea in your address. If you are ringing from a house telephone and are having problems being understood because of your accent or lack of English, you can leave the line open (don’t put phone down) and the number can be traced to the address. This will also work on a mobile phone, but takes a lot longer.

The following section provides contact details in the event of an emergency in and around the City and County of Swansea, for more detailed information have a look on the City and County of Swansea website.
