Welcome: A Film by Philippe Loiret
Film showing and panel discussion
Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea University
7pm – 9pm film, 9.30-10pm panel discussion
Written and directed by Philippe Lioret, Welcome is a compassionate and
inspiring drama about the hope of new beginnings and the power of true
love, centred on two couples contending with issues of separation and
dislocation. Having travelled across Europe, 17-year-old Bilal is
desperate to be reunited with his girlfriend Mina who has moved with
her family to England. Unable to enter the UK legally he decides to
learn to swim so that he can get across the channel. Bilal seeks the
help of middle-aged swimming instructor Simon who is privately reeling
from impending divorce from his socially-conscious wife Marion. In an
effort to win her back, Simon impulsively - and uncharacteristically -
risks everything by taking Bilal under his wing.
The showing of Welcome will be followed by a panel discussion exploring
some of the film’s themes chaired by Professor Nicola Cooper (Swansea
University) and including Norbert Mbu Mputu (South People’s Project),
Professor Heaven Crawley (CMPR) and Dr Sissy Helff (Goethe-University
of Frankfurt)
There is no charge for this event but spaces are limited (to 300) and will be allocated on a
first-come, first served basis.
